EMI Shielding Mesh in Electronics and Industrial Equipment


EMI shielding mesh is a specialized material made from conductive metal wires, like stainless steel or copper, that is used to block or attenuate electromagnetic interference. It works by acting as a Faraday cage to either reflect or absorb electromagnetic waves, protecting sensitive equipment from radio frequency interference (RFI) and EMI. This mesh can be customized and is available in various forms, such as rolls, cut pieces, or woven into other products like foils. 

 

How does EMI Shielding Mesh work?

 

Electromagnetic Shielding: The mesh creates a barrier that prevents electromagnetic waves from penetrating a protected area.

Faraday Cage: It functions as a Faraday cage, which is an enclosure made of a conducting material that blocks electromagnetic fields.

Absorption and Reflection: The mesh can reflect electromagnetic waves, while a small amount might penetrate if the shield is not thick enough. 

Common materials

Stainless Steel: Offers high magnetic permeability, making it ideal for magnetic field shielding.

Copper: Highly effective at attenuating both magnetic and electrical waves.

Brass: Another conductive metal used for EMI shielding. 

 

EMI Shielding Mesh: Form and Application

 

Customization: It can be supplied in rolls, cut into specific sizes, or fabricated into other products.

Applications: Used in electronic screens, control panels, windows, and for wrapping electric wires in a sleeve or tape form to shield them from noise.

High Transparency: Some types, like blackened stainless steel or copper mesh, provide excellent shielding performance while maintaining high visual clarity, making them ideal for screens. 

 

Things to Consider for EMI Shielding Mesh

 

OPI (Openings per Inch): The mesh density is measured in OPI. A lower OPI generally provides better EMI shielding.

More Effect: When placing mesh on screens, a more effect can occur. To avoid this, place the mesh at a specific angle, which may require requesting a sample to find the correct angle for your application.
